Would you like to learn how to make your own tinctures? Tinctures are a great way to get all the benefits of herbs, without having to eat them. In this blog post, I will teach you how to make a tincture using vodka and dried herbs. Making your own tinctures is easy and fun, and it allows you to customise the herbs that you use. Why wait? Let’s get started!

What Are Tinctures?

What are tinctures? Tinctures are a type of herbal medicine that is made by extracting the active components from herbs and suspending them in alcohol or a glycerin and water mixture. Tinctures have been used for centuries and can be found in many modern-day medications. Tinctures offer many benefits, such as being able to absorb through the skin quickly, having a long shelf life, and being easy to dose.

Tinctures Ingredients

Here are the ingredients you will be needing; herbs of your choice, vodka or any other alcohol you like, plastic wrap, and a jar or glass with a lid.

How to Make Tinctures

Step One
Firstly, start to chop your herbs finely and place them into the glass or jar.

Step Two
After you’ve filled your jar with the right ratio of herbs you desire, fill the rest of the glass or jar with alcohol. Unfortunately, the herbs can go mouldy if they are not submerged under the alcohol.

Step Three
Screw the lid on top of the jar. If you don’t have a lid use the plastic wrap and store it in a dry cool space.

Step Four
In this process, you must shake the jar a couple of times per day. If the alcohol has evaporated and the herbs are no longer submerged, refill the jar with more alcohol until the herb is submerged. This will keep the herb from going mouldy.

Step Five
Let this mixture extract for around 8 weeks.

Step Six
Pour the tincture into an amber dropper bottle with a fine mesh strainer on top. This will strain the herbs out after the extraction process is complete. If you want to extract more, you must remove the herbs and wrap them in cheesecloth. Then squeeze the remaining liquid that is left in the herbs.

Step Seven
If you are ready to consume the tincture, place a few drops directly under your tongue. If you don’t want to consume the tincture in that way, squeeze the dropper into a glass of water or tea up to 3 times a day. The number of drops will vary on how strong the tincture is.
